MEET THE BAND:
Richard Bird has over 25 years experience as a sound technician and recording engineer. He has mixed sound for such big names as Lee Greenwood, Alan Holdsworth, Adam Ant Power Station, to name only a few. Richard's years of experience behind the mixing console are demonstrated not only by his technical mastery, but his impeccable musical sense. He works days at the Audiophile recording studio in the French Quarter, engineering and producing traditional jazz recordings.
Involved with live music since he was 8 years old, Richard discovered his talent for mixing sound while playing with one of his early groups as a teenager. He says "I was the only person in the band who knew how to hook up the P.A. system, so I became the sound man too."
Richard is also an accomplished musician. When not working with The Boogie Men, he plays guitar with his own band called Hobson's Choice, an all original progressive rock quartet. The group has released two CDs and performs locally periodically. Richard sometimes opens the show for The Boogie Men; performing solo on his acoustic guitar, his repertoire includes classic tunes from the 1970s Prog Rock genre.
Richard's spare time is spent listening to Frank Zappa and other music from the 1970's (pre 1974, to be exact), watching old reruns of Star Trek, and working as an auto mechanic.
David Stocker was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. Music was his
first calling, beginning studies of piano/performance at the age of six (6).
As a student at Brother Martin High School he performed in the marching and concert
band playing the French Horn. Independently, David began playing electric guitar
and working with several underground music groups. After Brother Martin his musical
studies continued under the guidance of Dr. Jerry Sieg at the University of New
After many years working in a series of local bands with a variety of styles and
influences, David formed Hobson's Choice, the band that continues to be his vehicle
for original compositions. A multi-instrumentalist, David switched to keyboards
after forming the group, though he retains his love and dedication to electric/acoustic
and bass guitar compositions. The music of Hobson's Choice is progressive rock in nature,
exploring themes of classical music with rock driven foundations.
Other interests and commitments for David include work as a respected
sound engineer and website/graphic designer. Sound engineering has afforded him
the privilege of working with such New Orleans artists as: The Funky Meters,
George Porter Jr., Bonerama, Woodenhead.
Additionally he has held house sound engineer positions at: The House of Blues,
NOLA; The Howlin Wolf, NOLA; Kingston Audio Services, NOLA; and Irving Plaza, NYC.
Currently David continues his work with Hobson's Choice, studio and live projects,
web/graphic designing, as well as performing on keyboards with
national and local artists: Shannon McNally, and Bipolaroid.

Bassist Joel Webb was born in New Orleans on March 1, 1969, the third son of Malcolm and Nancy Webb. Joel's childhood was steeped in music;
Nancy Webb is a classical flautist, and to this day he remembers the first word he read by himself: "Beatles", from the jacket of his parents' copy of Meet the Beatles.
Joel's professional musical career began in 1986 with Suffocation by Filth, New Orleans' first speed/death metal band, which included Mike Williams, later of Eye Hate God [link] fame on vocals. Next for Joel was the "psychedelic garage jazz" of The Cheese Pajama Jazz Ensemble. It was while playing in this group that Joel met Nick Sanzenbach of Blood'n'Grits, which group Joel subsequently joined.
It was while playing in this band that Joel became reacquainted with childhood friend David Stocker, then playing guitar in the group. Upon the pair's departure from Blood'n'Grits, in 1991, they formed the original Hobson's Choice; with Stan Elder on vocals and flute and Tom Larson on drums percussion.
In subsequent years Joel played in various groups, notably The Kenny Claiborne Band, Toast, and Graham Scale the Connections, the latter group including David Stocker and Stan Elder as well as John Marcley of Tabula Rasa/Machine Screw fame.
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina Joel took his playing into a country vein with The Hungover Outlaws, featuring Clint Kauffmann. Today, in addition to playing with Hobson's Choice, Joel fills the bass chair in The Larry Hall Blues Band and Country Fried. He currently lives happily in New Orleans with his wife Siriwan and their astonishingly beautiful daughter Jennifer.
Since graduating from Berklee College Of Music in 1987, he has freelanced, performed, and played with many musicians and bands including Patrick Moraz, John Goodsall, Ray Charles, Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, Danny Duplantier, Lu Rojas, Harry Morel Big Band, Herb Tassin Big Band, Warren Clark French Quarter Jazz Band, Jerry Christopher Big Easy Jazz Band, Chris Owens, Grace Darling, Woodenhead, Brasilliance, Crescent, Lockdown and Museo. He has also done studio recording with various musicians, various bands and his own solo project.
Doug Walsh is currently teaching drums/percussion at Tulane University of New Orleans, where he also conducted the Tulane University Percussion Ensemble in concert in 2002.
He is also teaching private drum/percussion lessons at Ray Fransen's Drum Center. Since 2002, he has been a Percussion Audition Adjucator for the Louisiana Music Educator's Association Bands. He has also given drum/percussion clinics at local music stores, high schools and at Tulane University.
